The East Angel Foundation awards scholarships to graduating seniors at East High School, recognizing academic excellence, community involvement, and financial need while supporting students in achieving their educational goals.
Student Scholarships
The East Angel Foundation proudly awards scholarships to graduating seniors who embody East High School’s values of diversity, academic excellence, character, and community involvement. Supported by generous contributions from alumni, parents, and the Denver community, these scholarships provide essential financial aid to help students achieve their educational goals.
Since its establishment in 1926, the scholarship program has awarded over $1,005,000 to 484 students. The Scholarship Committee ensures fairness and equity in awarding funds, prioritizing students with the greatest financial need who meet the criteria of each scholarship.
Scholarships Available
The East Angel Foundation offers the following scholarships for graduating seniors:
1. The Cleworth LEAP Scholarship
- Award: $100,000 ($25,000 annually for four years)
- Eligibility: Need-based, for students with outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements.
- Details: Established in 2016 by Monty Cleworth (Class of 1978), this scholarship helps students “leap” toward excellence by enrolling in top-tier postsecondary institutions.
2. The East Alumni Scholarship
- Award: $6,000
- Eligibility: Recognizes exceptional academic performance and active participation in school and community activities.
- Details: Funded by generous East alumni since 1995, this award honors the most outstanding Angel each year.
3. The Thomas W. Bean Foundation Scholarship
- Award: $7,000
- Eligibility: For students who have overcome life challenges and exemplify hope and achievement.
- Details: Named for African American business pioneer Thomas Washington Bean, this scholarship highlights the transformative power of education.
4. The James Reece, Class of 1960 Scholarship
- Award: $4,000
- Eligibility: Merit-based, for students with exceptional academic accomplishments.
- Details: Created by the James Reece Foundation to honor the legacy of a lifelong educator and Harvard Business School graduate.
5. The Class of 1967, 1968, and 1969 Scholarship
- Award: $5,000
- Eligibility: Need-based, focusing on academic achievement and contributions to school and community.
- Details: Funded by members of these graduating classes, this award celebrates the spirit of collaboration and service.
In addition to these dedicated scholarships, the Foundation offers additional awards through the general application process.
How to Apply
To apply for an East Angel Foundation scholarship:- Review Requirements:
- Submit the FAFSA and provide the Student Aid Index (SAI).
- Write a personal statement or college essay.
- Include two teacher recommendations and one community recommendation.
- Participate in an in-person interview (April 8–10, 2025).
- Review 2025 Key Dates:
- March 21st, 2025: Applications due.
- April 8-10, 2025: In-person interviews.
- May 2025: Scholarships awarded.
