Turning 150

Yes—East High School is turning 150! Our school was founded in 1875, making it Denver’s original high school. But here’s something equally exciting—our iconic building is also celebrating a major milestone, turning 100 years old in 2025.

From its early days to the thriving institution it is today, East High has been a cornerstone of education, achievement, and community in Denver. Here’s how our beloved school grew up—and as we celebrate this milestone, we’ll be adding fun key facts along the way!

East High School, located in Denver’s historic City Park neighborhood, has shaped generations of students for a century and a half. Its breathtaking Jacobean-style architecture, designed by esteemed alumnus George H. Williamson, was completed in 1925. Towering over Colfax Avenue, the 162-foot clock tower, inspired by Independence Hall in Philadelphia, is a symbol of the school’s deep-rooted commitment to excellence and tradition. Designated as a Denver Historic Landmark in 1991, East High continues to be a stunning blend of history and modern education.

Throughout its history, East has been a leader in academic excellence, consistently ranking among the top public high schools in Colorado and the nation, as recognized by Newsweek and U.S. News & World Report. The school boasts a nationally recognized Constitutional Law team and an internationally competitive Model United Nations club, both of which have earned championship titles and accolades.

East High’s athletic teams, the Denver East Angels, have dominated Colorado sports for over a century. With an astounding 110 state championships, East ranks third in the state for most titles won. From basketball and tennis to gymnastics and track and field, student-athletes continue to bring home victories and foster unwavering school spirit. Most recently, East’s hockey team made history with a state championship win in 2022, adding to the school’s legendary sports record.

Beyond the classroom and the field, East High is a community that values resilience, diversity, and advocacy. With over 2,500 students representing Denver’s cultural richness, East fosters an inclusive and empowering environment. Student-led initiatives continue to drive positive change, demonstrating that East High’s legacy is not just about its past—it’s about its future.

As we celebrate 150 years of tradition, innovation, and excellence, we’ll be sharing fun facts, stories, and memories from East’s history. Stay tuned as we uncover the moments that have made East High what it is today!
