East High School’s esports team has made history, capturing their first-ever state championship in their inaugural year of competition. On December 10, seniors Austin Green and Jacob Malek, alongside freshman Will Turner, secured the Rocket League title with a dramatic last-minute goal against Valor Christian.

Principal Terita Walker praised the team’s evolution from a student-led gaming club to a competitive powerhouse with over 40 members. The program’s growth has been fueled by overwhelming community support, with donations of gaming consoles and supplies pouring in after a call for help in the school’s weekly newsletter.
Esports is rapidly gaining popularity within Denver Public Schools, with 18 high schools, four middle schools, and 17 elementary schools participating. The sport’s recognition by the Colorado High School Activities Association further highlights its legitimacy and appeal among students.

Team member Austin Green emphasized the inclusivity of esports at East, noting its ability to bring students from diverse backgrounds together. “Everyone plays video games,” Green shared. “The jock on the football team, the basketball players—everybody plays video games. I’m super glad there’s a place that’s inclusive for everyone in the school.”
